June 30th, 2010

It felt very lonely out there at Kissing Rock tonight, but not in a bad way. How could I feel scared, or dejected, or sad, when that sunset was telling me "it's time to relax"....

The Mary D. Hume shown here is slowly disintegrating; not much is left of the tough little steamer that made sailing history repeatedly. Built in 1881, she was longer in active service than any other commercial vessel on the Pacific coast. I'll fill you in on her whaling enterprises the next time I post her. (Who would think this little 98 foot boat could even survive in Arctic seas?)

Getting over to Pistol River takes us about twelve minutes, and the pleasure of those spectacular views are worth every second. Tonight there still weren't a lot of clouds, but those bright fog-steaks were all we needed as an absolutely brilliant backdrop for our sunset!

June 27th, 2010

This is one of my favorite spots for our Sunsets. Those little wood piles jutting out are quite an attraction for seagulls; sometimes they are all occupied. Tonight we have only one patient bird, happily keeping us company.

Tonight I didn't feel too excited to get down to the harbor and see what sunset there might be. When we have no clouds, not much can happen. Although the sun went down without a lot of fanfare, there was some: the violet color being cast on the calm sea, the end-of-the-day murmurings of the gulls and seals, the few select moments we are given to collect our thoughts at the end of another day.

We stopped in the middle of a movie to check out the sunset, a good decision. The drive to Pistol River was uneventful but well worth the effort. Don't you agree?
Coming home a large round moon ascended out from behind a hill, absolutely gorgeous. I don't know how to take that kind of picture yet, but I'm sure going to figure it out!

June 24th, 2010

The 21st was the longest day in the year. Sunset is about 9 now, which allowed me to leave right after the meeting, take my picture, and get back to the Kingdom Hall to associate! The nicest thing at the jetty was the gulls flying so close; it's not the usual.

When deep fog blankets the sunset, I recall the nights when I had my choice of dozens gorgeous scenes. So often the shapes and colors slid through each other in such soft progression that you could never guess the direction they might take! So often I find myself watching a completely unpredictable interval, as the sunset quietly unfolds itself.....

June 22nd, 2010

Tony and I drove to the beach on the slight chance that the heavy fog would lift. (I was wearing my nightie and robe, which shows how much hope I had.) There was nothing, nada. The picture posted is the very last remnant of last night's sunset; beautiful, isn't it?

June 21st, 2010

Pat and I drove to the harbor tonight, just in time to get our sunset. The seals and sea lions were barking on the dock as usual. What we couldn't figure out were the seal fins out in the water; no heads or bodies showing, just big old fins waving in the air, all in a line. (You can see them in the picture.) So Pat asked a man what the deal was, and he said,"They are doing what seals do."

Summer is delayed here, but tonight felt like SPRING. The gulls were in no hurry to stop their socializing in the warm air currents. It wasn't long ago that they couldn't wait to huddle down together, against the rough weather! Well, good; I don't know about you, but I'm ready!!

Who would think that a little sky color reflected on water could calm our thoughts so effectively? That something so easily accessible, and so often taken for granted, could be such a miraculous antidote for our daily stresses. I'm only just starting to appreciate the power of our SUNSETS....

June 18th, 2010

The sunset tonight was such that several others were stopping with their cameras, to jump out and grab a quick picture. Usually it's just me and maybe a few others who are there to watch the whole captivating process....Even though we were short on clouds, the few we had gave a "brilliant" performance!

June 17th, 2010

This evening we enjoyed a quiet dinner with close friends, then good conversation. On departing, we detoured towards the harbor. The sun was just going down, it's silhouette adorning the horizon, proof of another day accomplished.....

June 16th, 2010

Today we had tons of clouds so I was hoping for a different sort of sunset. But come evening, that same fog bank was there, limiting our sunset action! It was fun getting my pictures and watching it's progress, but it seemed pretty close to what we've been seeing.... So I'm driving home, past Turtle Rock RV Park, and something really different was happening! Isn't it a beautiful sky?

June 15th, 2010

The sunset almost escaped me tonight, as I was chatting on the phone. I barely made it in time to see the sun disappear behind that fog bank. But then those sparkly break-throughs started showing their fire! Peeking out to tell us "Goodnight"

June 14th, 2010

Sunset this evening was hazy and just so-so, at first glance. It was only after the sun had disappeared that liquid gold started to outline that solitary cloud. And that cascade of light rays started pouring down....

We got back from camping tonight, and, as usual, we had to touch bases with Chad and Pat as soon as we got here. I figured I could take my sunset picture from their deck, as they have a beautiful ocean view. So we drove over, said our "Hello"s, and got a glass of wine. In that few minutes the sun went down and I missed the perfect shot! But the one of what remained is certainly respectable; every aspect of a setting sun is such a short-lived treasure.

June 10th, 2010

This is the reward I have if I climb up my hill, about a 5 minute walk. Although the day started out raining, our sunset was a gentle nudge, reminding me of the warmer days ahead...

June 8th, 2010

As we got back home, rain was canceling out our sunset tonight. The one I'm posting is from last night as we drove through the Napa marshes. That seemed almost surreal..the stark landscape against that sky.....

June 7th, 2010

We began driving back to Oregon tonight, and I was commenting that it was quite hazy over the bay. As we were passing by Mare Island, the sunset started taking over the sky! I haven't ever noticed this particular kind of glow, but I wish you could have seen it in person; It was astounding!!

June 6th, 2010

After a visit with old friends this evening, we were driving back to our daughter's home wondering if it was too late to get a picture of the sunset. Tony pulled over to a safe spot along the busy highway, where I was pleased to get a quick shot. I'm trying hard not to miss any sunset opportunity, if possible; to me, they are all worth the effort.....

June 4th, 2010

Although this sunset did not light up the sky, it certainly made it's own statement! To me, it looked like a little portion of the skyline was set on fire; the intensity of reflected heat in those adjacent clouds was really something to admire.

June 3rd, 2010

We needed to make a quick trip to Trader Joe's tonight, where Tony handed me the camera and said if I didn't go out the back door "right now", I'd miss the last bit of sunset.
So I did, and as you can see, the sky was a tumble of golden clouds. A one-time-only-picture I almost missed!

June 2nd, 2010

We were visiting friends in Sonora, CA last night. After dinner I wanted to take a look at the sunset, which actually occurs earlier here. John initiated a fun drive in the hills to find a good view, and, with a lot of explanation of local landmarks, did locate several good spots. The Sonora area is interesting, and the territory lovely.
