The Mary D. Hume shown here is slowly disintegrating; not much is left of the tough little steamer that made sailing history repeatedly. Built in 1881, she was longer in active service than any other commercial vessel on the Pacific coast. I'll fill you in on her whaling enterprises the next time I post her. (Who would think this little 98 foot boat could even survive in Arctic seas?)
